Dear Students and Parents,
As the high school personal counsellor, my primary responsibility is to support the social and emotional well being of ACS Cobham high school students. To do that: I work with the Student Ambassadors to welcome new students throughout the school year and I meet with new students after they start in the school to check on their progress and offer any help if needed. I am available to discuss academic or personal concerns at any time for all students and parents, either by phone, e-mail or scheduled meetings. If a student is dealing with a situation such as a chronic illness or stressful family situation it is very helpful for me to know about it so that I can inform teachers that a student may be having difficulties, but without disclosing any details. I always encourage parents to keep me informed and I ask for their consent before sharing specific information with teachers. If a student is in emotional distress, I am available to meet with them to offer support on an as-needed basis. I can refer students and parents to counsellors or other professionals outside the school for ongoing support. I also work closely with the boarding house staff to provide student support. My role does not include helping students or parents with questions about course choices, scheduling or university applications. One of the academic deans (Mr. Worthington or Mrs.Briggs) or a college counsellor (Mr. Hinchey, Ms. Smith or Ms. Bhure) would be the appropriate person to answer those questions. I can also help with: Co-curricular activities (including community service): I would be glad to speak with any student or parent seeking information about them. Culture Club: I sponsor the club in which the students vote at the start of the year on the five West End musicals in London they would like to see during the school year. Parents are also welcome to purchase tickets if they wish. Wishing you all the best for the school year, Dr. Patricia Shea |
