Grade 8 Orientation Day
In May, the high school hosts all of the current grade 8 students for an orientation day. The grade 8 students spend the entire school day in the high school with a schedule specially designed for them. To start the day, they meet the high school administrators and review the schedule. They attend classes in English, History and Science for the high school teachers to give them a taster of what they can expect in grade 9. The students are able to choose from various elective courses, including Music, Drama, Visual Arts, Journalism and Computers to attend for taster sessions as well. They have a Q & A session with some of the current grade 9 students to ask questions about the Outward Bound trip at the start of the grade 9 school year and any other questions they may have about entering high school. The feedback in previous years from the grade 8 students and teachers has been that this is a very successful, much-anticipated event that the students look forward to and enjoy. The primary goal of the day is to help ease the natural anxieties that students experience when coming into high school.
